Back Pain Relief & Better Brain Function

If you see a Doctor of Chiropractic to help with your back pain, there’s often other benefits that occur in addition to the pain relief — including effects on brain function. Many people observe improvements in their posture, overall joint mobility, and there are even added benefits that are widespread throughout the rest of the body!

For example, take a look at this study that indicates improved ability to regulate emotions, and recognize pain!

What the Research Shows

Researchers scanned the brains of chronic low back pain patients before their first adjustment, after one session, and again after six sessions. They compared those scans to healthy controls who didn’t have any spinal adjustments.

What they saw:

  • After just one adjustment, patients had greater activity in areas like the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (part of the brain that plays a big role in pain perception and decision-making).
  • After six adjustments, they saw increased activity in the posterior cingulate and inferior frontal gyrus—both areas of the brain connected to pain processing and emotional regulation.

Chiropractic spinal adjustments don’t just reduce pain by improving joint mechanics, they literally rewire how the brain processes pain. This connection between back pain relief and brain function helps explain why many people notice improvements beyond pain alone.

If you or someone you care about is struggling with ongoing back pain, and can’t seem to find any results with other types of therapy, perhaps it’s time to consider the Chiropractic approach?
