The Stages Of Spinal Curves Development During Infancy & What Problems To Watch For!

I love watching infant spinal development. It’s the most beautiful reminder of how infinitely intelligent the human body is. Each phase has a purpose, and the body needs no coaching or instruction! It simply knows what to do. The little ones gradually move through these four phases and are moving about quickly in really no time at all. At least that’s how the first 12-18months feels to most parents I work with!

The adult spine has 4 curves, but when infants are born they only have two of them. The other two come with maturity as part of infant spinal development.

Infant Spinal Development Stages

In the first phase of spinal curve development, infants are only born with one C-shaped curvature in their spine.

When they start to lift their head within the first few months, they develop the second stage, which is the cervical lordosis. The posterior neck muscles get stronger to hold the head up, and your baby loves looking at you and looking around instead of just being all wobbly. You’ll watch them try and hold their head up, and get tired, but then slowly they will get better at it. That’s muscular strength and endurance right at work! (If you notice, they are only looking to one side, or can’t turn both sides easily – time to connect with a Paediatric Chiropractor!)

Their next stage is to develop the lumbar lordosis, which occurs when they start sitting, typically between 4-6 months. As they develop this curve, they become better prepared to start crawling and cruising around and developing more core strength to coordinate all the movements. When you watch your child start to sit, you’ll see them struggle with core stability, and they’ll often fall over from a sitting position a few times! Gradually their strength will improve and they will be sitting confidently exploring the world around them. (If your child is struggling with sitting and still seems a little bit floppy time to consult a Paediatric Chiropractor!)

Eventually, with all four curves of the spine developed, your child will support themselves upright. They will start cruising, then walking, and eventually running around in no time!

Why Infant Spinal Development Matters

It’s incredible that an infant spine will double in size in their first two years, and for me, has always highlighted the importance of ensuring infant spinal development is right on track.

Not only is the spine the foundation of all movement mechanics, it’s also the protection to the brain and spinal cord! Spinal nerves are responsible for your baby’s immune system, digestion, elimination, and respiratory systems. It’s important that these structures develop properly to promote the best health and functioning.

When you read some of the reviews from happy parents you’ll see some of the amazing whole body changes that are observed when an infant’s spine is moving the way it was designed to.

Chiropractic spinal adjustments for infants are very gentle and babies love them!

If you’re ready to have your child checked, I’d love to see them – and yes, you as an adult reading this should have a healthy spine too!

Sharing is Caring!
